New bishop raises questions about the ACNA’s commitment to Anglicanism: The Church of England Newspaper, Aug 27, 2010 p 6.
Derek Jones was consecrated as a bishop by Archbishop Russell McClanahan in the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches (CEEC) on January 6, 2007. His receipt into the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) in 2010 raised concerns about the ACNA’s commitment to the historic episcopate, as critics argued that Jones’ consecration lacked validity according to traditional Anglican standards. Despite these allegations, a review found that Jones’ apostolic succession, traced back to a Brazilian bishop recognized by Pope John XXIII, validates his orders. Jones’ accession into ACNA highlights ongoing debates about the interpretation of Anglican ecclesiology.
